A Summary of last night’s meeting at SHE building

July 4, 2008 – 5:06 am

Although more than 20 invitations by phone were confirmed, most of them were unable to show up at the meeting. But Sidgee’s referral of 4 new parents were the inspiring start at the meeting. Here are some from my rough notes;

The meeting started with the first concrete decision by many parents who wanted the time to change to 8:30pm.

Which was followed by a chat about the terms we used on disability…

Why .siph.net?

July 4, 2008 – 4:20 am

A common question which arises when I mention about this blog but most of them do not ask. But not this commenter on our about page. Its good that he asked, now It will be better to write about it. Ok, here’s why I chose “.siph.net”

The simplest and the easiest way for us to do online publishing is Wordpress. Like blogger (mvdisability.blogspot.com) addresses, wordpress too gives away free service similar to blogger which is “mvdisability.wordpress.com” BUT it has disadvantages as with any free service. We cannot use the plugins! Which I think is very important to run a this blog.

So, I’ve hosted it in one of my own domains which helps a lot in achieving this goal. Features like “Calendar”, “Guestbook”, “Polls” and even Printer friendly layout is currently achieved using “plugins” feature in Wordpress. I hope this answers the question of why it is on “.siph.net”

Questions to Min. Information re: CRPD

June 21, 2008 – 3:09 pm

Dear Minister Nasheed;

Now that Maldives have signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Maldives too agrees to do things to make everyone else aware that disabled people have the same rights as everyone else and to show them what disabled people can do.

In the CRPD convention, Article 8, on awareness says the countries should do this by;

They should do this by:

  • Having campaigns to change the way some people think about disabled people’s lives.
  • Showing everyone what jobs disabled people can do.
  • Teaching all children about equal rights for disabled people.
  • Getting the media to show disabled people properly.
  • Supporting more disability awareness work.

I’d like to ask you what your Minisitry is planning/doing to do to help the government ratify the CRPD? I would also like to know if there are any revisions/additions relating to CRPD on the reform process that is being done by the Ministry.

A copy of this question is posted on MVdisAbilty blog with links for further discussion and updates.

Yasiph is father of a child with disabilities(Yafaau), President of CARE Parents’ Forum and he’s actively involved in forming a disability support group and is a strong supporter of RatifyNOW.org

This is a question sent to Min. of Information’s website, Hyphen blog and Minister Nasheed’s Blog via its feedback page in an effort to review CRPD status and let the relevant authorities know that there are concerned individuals about CRPD and tht it is not just another Convention that Maldives have signed and kept archived.
